Marion Josephine (Phelps) Rawlins, age 85, Joplin, passed away on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Freeman West Hospital following an illness.
Named after her grandfathers, she was born August 30, 1926 to Fred and Flora (Jones) Phelps. Following her mother’s death in 1932, she was raised by her great aunt, Della Randolph Harryman in Joplin.
Josie, as she was known by her family and classmates, graduated from Joplin High School in 1944. She joined her sister, Ruth Harryman, and started working at the Southwestern Bell telephone office shortly after graduating from high school. She retired from Southwestern Bell in 1978.
Marion married Herbert Rawlins on April 12, 1957 in Miami, Oklahoma. They divorced in 1996. Marion enjoyed traveling, with her favorite excursion being when she and Herb traveled to New Zealand and Australia in 1985. She also enjoyed spending time with her classmates as they had many outings including Bingo, bus trips, and a cruise. She especially loved to play Bunco. Her other favorite activities included working puzzles, doing crafts, and she was never at a loss for humorous songs which entertained all around.
A member and past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Marion was also a member of Club 44. Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her great aunt, her brother, Roy Harryman, her sister, Ruth Harryman, and a sister in infancy.
Survivors include her sister, Louise Johnson of Estes Park, Colorado; sister-in-law, Betty Harryman of Joplin; nieces and nephews, Linda Harryman of Joplin, Nancy, Tom, and Andy Bass of Ozark, Missouri, Bryan, Katie, Daniel, and Bethany Bass of Lamar, Missouri, Joe Seger, Jay, Trentyn, and Jayleen Seger all of Webb City, Missouri, John Seger of Ft. Collins, Colorado, James, Mireya, Abigail, Samuel, and Daniel Seger of Estes Park, Colorado, David and Jack Seger Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Christie and Jeff Rose of Commerce City, Colorado.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Kim Hartje, the entire staff and all the residents of Whispering Pines Senior Living for making Marion a welcome member of their home for the past five years. Special thanks to John “Kevin” Shofler for his wonderful spa days that Marion enjoyed so much.
Services will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Bob Simon officiating. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
Members of Club 44 will be seated together as a group.
The family will be at the home of Betty and Linda Harryman, 2930 S.New Hampshire, Joplin.
